Location Saves Lives

Emergencies can happen anywhere, at any time.  Knowing where you are and what is happening around you can help keep you, and those around you, safe.

In an emergency, one of the first pieces of information you will need to share is where you are. Whether you're visiting a cottage, working the back field of a farm, boating a beautiful lake, or exploring the community, knowing your location can help emergency responders find you faster when you need them. 

Why Your Location Matters

When calling 9-1-1 or requesting assistance, responders need to know exactly how to find you.
There's no time for confusion in an emergency. For example, many communities have a "Queen Street" and some lake names are repeated throughout the province and even within Peterborough County. You could get very lost on Lost Lake if you can't say whether it is in the Township of Douro-Dummer or the Township of Havelock-Belmont-Methuen.

In Case of Emergency

You can communicate your location in many ways — civic address with number, street name, and town or township; a campsite within a provincial park, GPS coordinates (latitude and longitude) — but when a location is hard to describe and seconds matter, the what3words app provides a quick, unique set of 3 words for every 3 metres square on the planet that is recognized by our 9-1-1 responders.

Know Before You Need It

Take a few minutes to learn the location information for places you visit regularly or how to describe new places:
  • Your home
    • Teach children how to communicate their address 
  • Cottage or seasonal property
    • Post your complete civic address (9-1-1 number, street name, community) or what3words for your driveway, dock, or outbuildings for visitors to find easily
  • Workplace
    • Keep the civic address and/or what3words for your building entrance posted at your desk
  • Favourite parks and trails
  • Recreational areas
  • Boat launches and waterfront locations
For all locations, install what3words on your phone today. Have it before you need it. 
There is no cost and no tracking. The app simply references your location to its global grid to provide the information you need, even when you can't get data service.
