Road Maintenance

Road maintenance in Peterborough County is the responsibility of the Operations Division of the Planning and Public Works Department.

We maintain over 700 kilometres of road throughout the County, with depots located in Buckhorn, Douro, Havelock, Millbrook, Selwyn, and Apsley.

County Road maintenance activities
  • Seasonal Maintenance
    • Road maintenance is generally performed on a seasonal basis, however some tasks are performed year-round such as Patrolling, Sign Maintenance, Pothole Patching, and Brushing.
Road Jurisdiction & Authority
  • Provincial Highways
    • There are three major highways in Peterborough County: Highway 115,  Highway 7, and Highway 28.  These roads are the responsibility of the Ministry of Transportation. Emcon Services Inc oversees their maintenance and can be contacted at 1-877-979-0998
  • County Roads
    • County Roads are arterial roads that link communities. They are the responsibility of Peterborough County and are named numerically (Peterborough County Road 1, Peterborough County Road 2, etc).
  • Local Municipal Roads
    • Local municipal roads are collector roads within settlement and developed areas. They are the responsibility of the local municipality or township you pay your property taxes to.
    • There are 8 local municipalities (lower tier Townships) within Peterborough County as well as two First Nations.
  • Private Roads
    • Private roads are the responsibility of a person, association, or corporation. These roads are not maintained by the County nor by the local Municipality.
Work Zone Safety

You can help us keep our roads crews safe by:

  • Adhering to posted speed limits and other signage on the road
  • Avoiding distractions while driving
  • Planning ahead to avoid delays - check out Municipal 511 for real time projects and closures. 
  • Treating construction zones as if they were your own workplace
  • Always Be Kind! Roads staff are following legislated guidelines to keep the public and the crew workers safe during road maintenance and construction
