Love Your Number

When seconds count, your 9-1-1 civic address sign could save your life.

Peterborough County/City Paramedics, Peterborough County, and the Otonabee-South Monaghan Fire Department have launched the Love Your Number campaign to remind residents how important it is to keep your civic address sign, also known as a 9-1-1 number, house number, or green blade, visible and well maintained.

Whether you live in a rural area with a reflective sign posted at the end of your driveway, or in an urbanized settlement with house numbers on your home, your civic address helps first responders find you when it matters most.

Quick Checklist

Is your 9-1-1 address sign:
  • Reflective and easy to read at night?
  • Visible from both directions on the road?
  • Free from tall grass, snow, or overhanging tree branches?
  • Properly posted according to your local township’s by-laws?

If not, then show your number some love today!

What You Can Do When Help Is On The Way?

If you're able, a few simple actions can help responders reach you faster:

  • Unlock doors
  • Turn on exterior lights
  • Secure pets
  • Have a list of medications ready

A Sign With Many Names - But One Critical Purpose

If you're able, a few simple actions can help responders reach you faster:

  • Unlock doors
  • Turn on exterior lights
  • Secure pets
  • Have a list of medications ready

Whatever the name, the purpose is the same: It’s your emergency location marker.

That reflective number is not only vital for paramedics and firefighters, but also helps police, delivery drivers, and utility providers locate your property quickly and safely.

Don’t Let Nature Get In the Way

Especially in rural and seasonal areas:
  • Trim around signs regularly
  • Clear snow, brush, and tall grass
  • Make sure emergency vehicles can access your driveway
  • Keep signage illuminated and unobstructed in urban areas
