Proclamation - International Overdose Awareness Day - August 31, 2023
International Overdose Awareness Day
August 31st, 2023
Whereas August 31st 2023 is International Overdose Awareness Day, and
Whereas we honour, appreciate, and thank our local healthcare workers for their compassionate and caring efforts to prevent hundreds of overdose deaths every year; and
Whereas we recognize the purpose of International Overdose Awareness Day as remembering loved ones lost to overdose and ending the stigma of drug-related deaths; and
Whereas we resolve to play our part in reducing the toll of overdose in our community, which claimed the lives of an estimated 43 Peterborough County and City residents between January 1st and July 31st this year, together with countless more affected forever; and
Whereas we affirm that the people affected by overdose are our sons and daughters, our mothers and fathers, our brothers and sisters, and they are deserving of our love, compassion and support;
Therefore I, Warden Bonnie Clark, do hereby proclaim August 31st, 2023, as “International Overdose Awareness Day” in Peterborough County, and I encourage all residents and visitors to commit to ending the stigma of drug-related deaths, to stand with those whose lives have been affected forever, to educate themselves and others about harm reduction, recognizing the signs and symptoms of an overdose, and how to react in order to save a life.
Bonnie Clark, Warden
Peterborough County
