Subject: Peterborough County Council make first decisions on Draft 2023 Budget – 8% Tax Levy Increase reduced (for now) to 4.97%

Peterborough County has delivered their draft 2023 Budget and after some staff recommended changes were made today the tax levy increase has been reduced from the original 8% to a 4.97% tax levy increase. The budget increase currently sits at 4.97% which includes a dedicated infrastructure levy of 2.5%.

“Things are tough and will continue to be for some time. Our staff have taken great steps to get the budget to where it is today and recognize the need to balance the County’s budgetary pressures with resident affordability. The County has made great strides in ensuring dedicated funding for our asset infrastructure in previous budgets at 2.5% and it is making a real impact. We need to continue to fund our essential assets to ensure their viability for years to come.”

Warden Bonnie Clark

The total proposed tax levy increase equates to approximately $64 to the average home, or $24 per $100,000 in assessed value.

Inflation and the lasting impacts of the Covid-19 pandemic are impacting our operating activities into 2023.

County Council will further debate the draft budget at the meeting on February 15, 2023. It is anticipated that the final budget will be approved in March.
